Ava DuVernay is a director, producer, writer, marketer and film distributor. She made her feature film debut with the documentary, This is the Life (2008), a history on hip hop movement that flourished in Los Angeles in the 1990's. Her works include films, short films, documentaries, documentary series, television series and music videos. In 2019, she created, co-wrote, and directed the Netflix drama miniseries, When They See Us, based on the 1989 Central Park jogger case, which has earned critical acclaim.

DuVernay won the directing award in the U.S. dramatic competition at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival for her second feature film, Middle of Nowhere, becoming the first African-American woman to win the award. In 2017, she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature for her film, 13th (2016), and her talents have led her to be nominated and to win several awards for her directing and writing. DuVernay continues to make huge strides, breaking down barriers with social commentary and creating thought-provoking, artistic pieces that leave a lasting impact on viewers.
